The Allentown bomb squad was called to Slatington this morning to investigate a suspicious package. Crews were called to the 1200 block of Main Street shortly after 6am. The bomb squad, fire officials and police closed off roads and alleys in the area. Residents in the area have been told to shelter in place and several homes between Long Alley and Main Street were reportedly evacuated.
Authorities are investigating after a woman's body was pulled from the Lehigh Canal in Allentown. The body was first spotted Sunday afternoon by a passerby and emergency crews responded to Canal Park to make a rescue. The unidentified woman was pulled from the water and officials are saying there's no obvious cause of death.
Holy Infancy School in Bethlehem is moving to the former Incarnation of Our Lord Parish School at Thomas and Pierce streets in time for the 2019-2020 school year. The diocese says this building is better suited for an elementary school and the move will be a positive for students and the future of Catholic education on the South Side of Bethlehem.
Pennsylvania Republican Sen. Pat Toomey says his vote against President Trump's emergency border wall declaration was not an attack on the President but rather a vote to defend Congress' power to say how taxpayers' money should be spent. "I'm not sure that's it's straight-up an illegal act. I think it's a strained argument, but there is a plausible argument for the legality of what the President did," Toomey said on NBC's "Meet the Press." Toomey said the court will likely decide whether the President's attempt to shift money without Congressional approval is illegal.
State officials are expanding the quarantine zone for the Spotted Lanternfly in Pennsylvania. The Department of Agriculture announced over the weekend that Dauphin County will join Lehigh, Monroe, Northampton, Schuylkill and Berks counties plus the Philadelphia metro area in the zone. Spotted lanternflies are destructive invasive bugs that can devastate local plant life and agriculture. Any counties in the zone are open to state regulations that control what related commodities can be shipped out, in order to prevent the accidental shipping of eggs, nymphs or adults that could potentially create new infestations.
Penn State is coming up short in its bid to trademark the phrase Happy Valley. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office denied the university's application to own the term describing the Nittany Lions's rural setting. Penn State has six months to appeal.
The Powerball jackpot is now over the $500-million mark. Lottery officials say no one picked all six numbers in Saturday night's drawing. That means Wednesday night's jackpot will be worth at least $550-million.
