For the second time this school year, students and staff at the Lehigh Christian Academy off of Cedar Crest Boulevard had to be partially evacuated Thursday morning. Eight people were taken from the school to the hospital after they became ill around 9:30am. Last October, an evacuation was needed after a possible contaminant leak inside the school building. Four people were evaluated at the hospital in that incident.
What's being called an automated bomb threat Thursday morning at Southern Lehigh High School was deemed not credible. Upper Saucon Township Police Department said the threat message was made after students arrived at the school, but following a search of the building and grounds, it determined there was no danger. Police are still investigating where the threat came from.
The Lehigh County Board of Commissioners has voted to approve a real estate tax credit for volunteer firefighters. The ordinance provides for a real estate tax credit of up to $150 per volunteer, providing they meet eligibility criteria. Commissioners hope the tax credit will entice more people to become volunteer firefighters.
A man working for the Schuylkill County Municipal Authority died at the hospital after being hit by a vehicle while he was on the sidewalk. Pottsville police were called to the 400 block of Nichols Street for a report of a pedestrian being hit around 10:40 a.m. Crews found 46-year-old Jeremy Smith was severely injured and was rushed to a hospital, where he later died. Police say an SUV driven by a 51-year-old Minersville man left the roadway and hit Smith. Police say the investigation is continuing and charges are pending..
Authorities in Monroe County are launching an investigation after human remains were discovered near Stroudsburg. The remains were discovered yesterday afternoon in a wooded area near the I-80 on-ramp along Park Avenue in Stroudsburg. The coroner was called to the scene and an anthropologist will be called for assistance on the case.

Boscov’s CEO and Chair Jim Boscov says, “We’re happy to make those BB&B coupons useful and introduce shoppers to Boscov’s at the same time." Big Lots also says it will accept the coupons through May 7. Bed Bath & Beyond filed for bankruptcy protection Sunday and announced it plans to close all of its stores by the end of June.
The Pennsylvania state House has unanimously approved a bill that would ban pelvic and rectal exams on patients who are unconscious. The measure approved Wednesday would apply to patients who are under anesthesia and haven't been told in advance or consented to such an exam. Currently, medical students are allowed to give such exams for learning purposes, even if there's no medical need for the exam. House Bill 507 awaits action in the state Senate and then would need to be signed into law by Governor Shapiro.
The Philadelphia Eagles traded up one spot Thursday night to get the player some analysts called the best in the NFL Draft. With the 9th overall pick, the Eagles chose Georgia defensive lineman Jalen Carter, who said hearing his name called was emotional. "My mom was hanging on every second. I was thinking about how my family felt. I've been grinding all my life for this moment and seeing the smiles on their faces and the tears coming out of their eyes. It made me tear up," Carter said. There are off the field question marks surrounding Carter, who was charged on March 1 with misdemeanor reckless driving and racing related to a fatal crash that left a Georgia teammate and recruiting staffer dead. Carter pleaded no contest to both charges. He was sentenced to 12 months probation and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine, perform 80 hours of community service and complete a driving course. With the Eagles' second first round choice, they picked Carter's Georgia teammate, linebacker Nolan Smith.
