The NTSB continues to investigate Saturday morning's train derailment that happened in Lower Saucon Township. Three trains were involved in the accident that sent several cars into the Lehigh River. Northampton County Executive Lamont McClure says environmental damage appears to be minimal. "That ended up being about 50 gallons of diesel fuel, which was remediated," McClure says. The NTSB says data from the locomotive event recorders have been recovered. An initial report on what happened could be coming within the next three weeks. A final report may not be completed for a year or two.
Two men were shot early Sunday morning in Allentown. Allentown police say the shooting occurred around 4 a.m. in the 700 block of E. Highland Street. Investigators say when they arrived, they found a large crowd dispersing and 17 bullets on the ground. The two people who were shot turned up at the hospital. Their injuries are not life-threatening. Police say they are not cooperating with the investigation.
Accu-Weather's Joe Lundberg says if you like rainy days, you'll love this week. "Later tonight and into tomorrow, there will some more rain, probably a half-inch or so. Then that goes away but then there's more rain later Wednesday and Wednesday night and that could be another inch or better. Then there's more rain on top of that for the weekend too," Lundberg says. He says we might end up with more than two inches of rain by the end of this very rainy week.
A Pennsylvania man has been arrested and charged with the grisly murder of a pregnant Amish woman. 23-year-old Rebekah Byler was six months pregnant when she was killed inside her family's home. Her husband found the body. The couple's two young children were home at the time of the killing, but were unharmed. 52-year-old Shawn Cranston is accused of breaking into the Byler home in Crawford County and murdering Byler. While police aren't saying anything about a possible relationship between Cranston and Rebekah Byler, a woman claiming to be Cranston's foster daughter has said the incident may be a case of mistaken identity. That woman says a couple who used to live in the Byler home had adopted Cranston's grandson years ago and he wanted the boy back.
State officials say Pennsylvania employers added more than 111,000 jobs last year. The Department of Labor and Industry says that number pushed the addition of nonfarm jobs to a new state record, nearly 6.2-million. The jobless rate has also fallen to 3.5 percent. That's down from 4.3 percent the year before. Political analysts say the numbers will likely show up this spring in spending battles by state lawmakers.
Nearly 300 people are registered for courses this month on learning the Pennsylvania Dutch language. They're being offered at the Berks History Center. Associate Director Bradley Smith says interest in the classes has grown tremendously in the two years they've been offered, with local people and students from across the U.S. and even foreign countries participating. Smith says the course is offered both in-person and online and also features teachings about the Pennsylvania Dutch culture. He says the language was once spoken by nearly 40-percent of the state's population.
A co-defendant of indicted New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez is pleading guilty. Trucking and insurance broker Jose Uribe pleaded guilty to seven counts on Friday including conspiracy to commit bribery, fraud, obstruction of justice and tax evasion while also agreeing to cooperate with prosecutors in the international bribery case. Uribe stands accused of a "corrupt relationship" with Menendez, providing a Mercedes-Benz for the Senator's wife Nadine in exchange for help in a fraud investigation. Menendez and all the other co-defendants have pleaded not guilty in the case.
