Eagles Notebook 11/5/12
Big Play DJ ... WR DeSean Jackson caught a 77-yard touchdown, his longest since a 91 yarder on 12/12/10 at Dallas. Jackson now has six touchdowns that have covered 70-plus yards (four receptions, two punt returns). The only Eagle with more is Timmy Brown (9) ... Jackson reached 100 receiving yards for the 15th time in his career (twice in two games against the Saints), tying Fred Barnett for fifth place in team history ... Jackson also passed Barnett for eighth on the team’s all-time receiving yards list with 4,712 and tied Wilbert Montgomery for 12th on the team’s all-time receptions list with 266.
Shady Hits the Century Mark ... RB LeSean McCoy recorded his 12th career 100-yard rushing performance (119 yards), tying Ricky Watters for the fifth-most in franchise history. In doing so, he now has 3,640 career yards, supplanting Tom Woodeshick for eighth on the team’s all-time list.
Forcing the Issue ... The Eagles generated three forced fumbles on the night. DE Brandon Graham recorded his first full sack of the season, stripping the ball from Drew Brees and also recovering the fumble, which led to an Eagles score. DE Jason Babin also had a sack and forced fumble ... RB Chris Polk forced a fumble on special teams, the first of his career.
Mike Check ... QB Michael Vick became the first player in the NFL to exceed 20,000 passing yards and 5,000 rushing yards in his career ... Vick (1,115) surpassed Sonny Jurgensen and Bobby Thomason and moved into seventh on the team’s all-time passing attempts list. He also passed Roman Gabriel and moved into sixth in team history with 671 completions ... Vick has 580 rushing yards in seven starts against the Saints.
Offensive Quick Hits ... The offense has scored points on their opening drive of the second half in seven straight games (three touchdowns, four field goals) ... RB Bryce Brown’s 40-yard run was the longest of his career and the longest by an Eagle this season ... The offense accounted for 447 total net yards, surpassing 400 for the fourth time in eight games ... TE Brent Celek tied John Spagnola for 15th on the team’s all-time receptions list with 256. The only Eagles tight end with more catches is Pete Retzlaff (452).
Oh Henery ... K Alex Henery has made 13 field goals in a row, which is tied for the sixth-longest streak in team history.
Birdseed ... S David Sims made his first-career start, becoming the seventh Eagle to do so this season ... T Todd Herremans made his 100th career start.
Grades
-Offense: F: QB Michael Vick and the offense gashed the Saints 32nd rank D for 447yds of offense. They got the ball in RB Lesean McCoy’s hands and compiled over 120 yards of offense, we should be talking about an Eagles victory? Well your wrong! The Eagles offense found success until they found themselves inside their opponent’s 20 yard line.
The red zone turned into the dead zone! They went 0/5 in TD efficiency and only recorded 6 points, not to mention a pick six returned by the Saints. This offense was just too anemic. Howard Mudd needs to be the next one to get fired for developing this offensive line. Another one bites the dust and Todd Herremans was lost early in the game. They had three subs and it showed. QB Michael Vick sacked 7 times in the game. Vick stood no chance behind this group and. Turnovers, penalties, failed opportunites, and field goals aren’t going to win football games! Once a high powered offense that was aggressive and took shots that was feared by opposing defenses are a thing of the past.
-Defense: D: A better performance this week but after allowing the Falcons to roll all over them, the only way was up. A few sacks and turnovers weren’t enough to contain Drew Brees and this Saints offense. A well balance attack the Eagles D had no answer for. Brees was efficient picking apart this secondary for almost 240 yards. We hardly heard the linebackers names as they had no answer for TE Jimmy Graham or New Orleans rushing attack.
We saw again an aggressive style from Todd Bowles in his second game but his scheme was too predictable that Brees was able to pick it apart. They were able to get pressure on him but not contain him. There just isn’t too many encouraging things to say right now about this defense.
-Special Teams: C: This unit continues to not make any type of impact. They had a shot to open things up with some trickery with Riley Cooper laying in the endzone. At the time it was pure genius until Brandon Boykins throw was a forward lateral and called back. Bobby April is slipping…
-Overall: F: Another pitiful performance. This team had their opportunities but plain and simple, they didn’t execute. This team is playing with no pride or heart. It seems Andy Reid has lost his voice in this locker room and the players aren’t responding. The question is how much longer will Jeffrey Lurie allow this to last? Hopefully not much longer.
