On Monday afternoon following the Eagles 38-33 loss to the Dallas Cowboys Andy Reid addressed the media on the current state of the Philadelphia Eagles and it looks to be official at the Michael Vick era in Philadelphia has come to a halt.
Reid confirmed on Monday afternoon that QB Nick Foles will remain the starter for the remainder of the season even with QB Michael Vick healthy. The 6-6 243lbs gun slinger has put up 793 yards, 2 TDs, 3 INTs completing 61 percent of his passes in 4 games(3 starts). He hasn’t turned the ball over in two consecutive weeks and looks to really settle down and come into his own.
We know the old saying that a player shouldn’t lose his job because of injury but ironic enough the same thing happen to Vick in 2010 when he took over for an injured Kevin Kolb after week 1 and remained the starter from then on. The 32 year old quarterback hasn’t done a thing in his tenure to really show he take his game to the next level to put Philly over the top. In 2012 he has turned it over 14 times in nine games and 41 in 34 games since 2010. Like I have been saying all along, Foles is the only way Reid can go.
Whether Reid is here or not next year he has to coach and play like he will return so management and the organization can evaluate and see what they have with the young kid. Since it definitely looks like the Eagles will move forward from Vick they have to know if Foles can be the franchise quarterback of the future for this franchise. Early on it wasn’t so good but after seeing what he did against the Cowboys(Yes I know it’s one game against a lousy defense) but he looked comfortable in the pocket and played with confidence. Something we haven’t seen from him since preseason.
He still has to work on a few things like handling pressure and coming up big in key moments, his deep ball accuracy, and a few other things but it’s going to take time to develop this kid. If he was ready to play right away he would of went in the 1st round. But we saw progress and flashes that he can be the guy. He made great decisions on some tough throws, good footwork to extend plays in the pocket, good pocket presence to deliver the football and for one the offensive line gave him time to deliver the football which helps when the defense fears the running game with RB Bryce Brown running all over the Cowboys D.
This is Foles final dress rehersal in what direction the organization will go in 2013. Right now it's Foles' job to lose. If we see continue improvement from Foles and once RB Lesean McCoy comes back, the Eagles will have force to be wreckon with with the two headed monster out of the backfield if utilized correctly, I feel we might see the old school Eagles teams, where they won with a running game and defense. And hey you never know, Reid might return which is every Eagles’ fan worst nightmare
