Eagles Notebook

In the Nick of Time ... QB Nick Foles set the franchise’s single-game rookie passing records with 32 completions and 381 yards. He also scored three touchdowns (two passing, one rushing); including a game-winner to WR Jeremy Maclin as time expired ... The last Eagles rookie quarterback with a rushing touchdown was John Reaves in 1972 ... Foles’ 1,174 passing yards this season are the third-highest total ever by an Eagles rookie. He trails only John Reaves (1,508 in 1972) and Davey O’Brien (1,324 in 1939). His 113 completions are an Eagles rookie record.

Cutting it Close ... The Eagles have won four games by two or fewer points this season, which is the most in team history ... It was also the team’s fourth come-from-behind win.

Offensive Quick Hits ... WR Jason Avant posted his fifth-career 100-yard receiving game and his first in 2012. He also moved past Keith Jackson for 17th on the team’s all-time receptions list with 244 ... Jeremy Maclin recorded his eighth 100-yard receiving game and scored the game-winning touchdown as time expired. Maclin’s 242 receptions are tied with Keith Jackson for the most ever by an Eagle in his first four seasons ... This marked the second game this season with two 100-yard receivers (Baltimore, week 2) ... In his seven career starts, WR Riley Cooper has collected 23 receptions for 364 yards and three touchdowns .

Return to Sender ... WR Damaris Johnson’s 271 punt return yards this season rank second all-time among Eagles rookies, trailing only DeSean Jackson’s 440 in 2008.

Oh Henery ... K Alex Henery snapped his consecutive field goals streak at 22, which was a team record and the longest streak in the NFL at the time ... Henery (208) passed Calvin Williams for 20th on the team’s all-time scoring list (needs 11 to pass Gary Anderson for 19th)... Henery also tied Gary Anderson (47) for eighth on the team’s all-time field goals list.

Rookie Rusher ... DT Fletcher Cox posted a sack and now has 4.0 on the season, which is tied for the fifth-highest total ever by an Eagles rookie and the second-most by a defensive tackle (Corey Simon – 9.5 in 2000) ... Cox has three sacks in the last five games.

Birdseed ... WR Marvin McNutt and LB Ryan Rau made their NFL debuts, becoming the 14th and 15th Eagles to do so this season. Rau made a special teams tackle on his first play ... TE Brent Celek tied DeSean Jackson for 12th on the team’s all-time receptions list with 274 ... DT Cullen Jenkins collected his third sack of the season ... TE Clay Harbor has a career-high two touchdowns this season.

Grades

-Offense: A-: QB Nick Foles just took his game leap and bounds looking like a seasoned veteran out on that football field. He stepped up his game in crunch time showing great leadership to lead the Eagles down the field for a game winning drive including converting two 4th downs and calling the game winning play to Jeremy Maclin for the TD! He set a rookie passing record in Sunday’s game. And more importantly despite being behind a wretched offensive line that allowed him to get sacked six times, he still had great composure in the pocket, great decision making with the football, and great pocket presence when pressure was in his face to step up and make the throw.

The young kid was cool and collective spreading the football around. Both Jason Avant and Jeremy Maclin surpassed 100yds in the game making great effort on some tough grabs. The running game wasn’t their either as the Eagles only had 13 design runs to running backs and the latest sensation RB Bryce Brown was brought back down to earth with only six yards on 12 carries against a stout Tampa Bay run defense. Foles was without his top wide receiver, running back and tight end and he played extremely well. Granted it was against the Buccs passing defense that was dead last in the league but no matter he came up big in a key situation to snap the Eagles losing streak. He is making great progressions in his game playing with incredible confidence right now and the final three weeks will really show what we have with this kid.

-Defense: B: Maybe the wide 9 was the issue? Defensive Coordinator Todd Bowles probably had his best game plan to date since taking over as the Eagles DC. He came up with some exotic blitz packages and schemes to confuse the Buccs’ offense. The defense was flying all around the ball and you could see the energy from this group and this defensive line. They brought down QB Josh Freeman twice with a couple of hits and pressures to rattle him in the pocket.

They still haven’t forced a turnover in weeks. And despite winning the game they still had their issues. RB Doug Martin went off for 128yds and a TD on the ground snapping the Eagles streak of 12 games without allowing a 100yd rusher. The secondary continue to have problems controlling the big time wide receiver. Vincent Jackson continues to impress bringing in six grabs for 131yds and a TD. And the red zone efficiency remains a problem. Once opponents are inside the 20s it’s almost a guarantee they will get six and Sunday was no exception as Tampa Bay went 3-3 in TD efficiency in the red zone. But this unit is showing flashes and coming together. If this was like any other week, this game would have been over in the 1st quarter. They aren’t fixed but they are improving.

-Special Teams: F: Special team play almost doomed the Eagles in this game. Two Alex Henery missed field goals (granted one was from 58 yards) after drilling 22 consecutive attempts. Then the costly botched punt return by Damaris Johnson which the Buccs eventually capitalized on the gift for their first score of the game to jumpstart them in position to win the football game.

-Overall: B: After 70 long days, and eight games the Eagles finally slay the dragon snapping their eight game losing streak. It wasn’t perfect but it was enough to win the game and a lot of things to be encouraged about from the offense and the defensive side of the football. There are some issues but unless over the next couple of weeks Nick Foles play is horrendous, it is safe to say no matter what he will be the guy in 2013. The real question is like I have been saying all along if Foles excels, is it enough to save Andy Reid’s job? I would say no but never say never with this organization.
