Last week when new Eagles Head Coach Chip Kelly addressed the media for the first time with his new assembled coaching staff, he made it clear that the starting quarterback will be the guy that wins it out on the practice field. Everyone assumed he was talking about QB Nick Foles and QB Michael Vick fighting for the right to be the starter, but another gun slinger feels he has just as much of a shot to gain the position.
On Monday newly signed QB Dennis Dixon addressed the Philadelphia media for the first time in a conference call where he had some interesting comments regarding the quarterback competition. He went on to say that it was his “understanding the job is open so it will be very competitive ... around here. May the best man win.” He also went on to say he credits his lack of production and opportunity to college ACL tear and that it “stunt” his development.
Im all for a guy having confidence in himself and his abilities to help whichever team he is on but Dixon can’t serious. He is lucky that he is given the opportunity to compete in a backup role since he does know Chip Kelly’s offensive scheme with his experience under Kelly at the University of Oregon. The only playing time Dixon will be having this season if QB Michael Vick goes down with injury which is likely, but who knows if the Eagles are finish with adding depth to the quarterback position with the draft just around the corner. But if Kelly is seriously considering in the back of his mind that Dixon is in the running to be the starter come opening day, the fan base might turn on him real quick.
Dixon was picked up last week off the Super Bowl Champions Baltimore Ravens practice squad when he signed a contract to come to Philadelphia. The 28 year old has only started 3 games in his career all for the Pittsburgh Steelers with a record of 2-1.
