Hi Bobby,
I just glanced at the paper this morning and noticed an article about a surplus in Harrisburg. Politicians are scrambling to spend it, putting stuff back into the budget. Why don't they use this surplus to help fund the bloated pension system, rather than raise our taxes? Just wondering.

Gunther -
Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., has said that the DOJ has spent more time and resources trying to protect the careers of its officials who knew about the operation (Fast and Furious) than in holding accountable those who were involved. In fact, the evidence shows that the only ones who have been punished are those who blew the whistle on the operation, while those who were engaged in wrongdoing have been rewarded – reassigned or promoted with their pensions still intact.
Compare this to our recent Columbia debacle where heads did roll. How ironic!

Bobby,
Just saw an article from the Washington Post (via the Drudge website), “For first time since Depression, more Mexicans leave U.S. than enter”. When I saw this story this morning it dawned on me that Obama really does have an immigration program. He really is a genius, by making our economy worse than Mexico’s, he solves the illegal immigration problem and makes it look like it’s the illegal’s choice not come here anymore.

Subject: Letter to the editor, the meaning of words
Words have power. Not only do words have direct meaning, but they also convey concepts, which can be misleading or completely wrong.
A case in point is the word “free”, as in “free stuff”. The word implies a transaction that does not involve a financial exchange by anyone in the product or services supply chain. So, when an obviously not-poverty-stricken young woman asks for free contraceptives, she apparently is asking everyone involved in supplying this product, from the supplier of the raw material, the manufacturer, shipper, handler, retail outlet, and probably others, not to receive payment for their goods or services. No one, not even the young woman in question, would agree to such an arrangement. Obviously, she meant that people other than herself should pay for her “stuff”.
This misunderstanding can easily be corrected.
Free for her is not free to the rest of us who would be paying for her contraceptives. Therefore, I suggest that the lexicon be changed, substituting the words “paid by others” whenever the word “free” is used when referring to “stuff”. If someone on radio or television uses the word “free”, there should be an immediate correction stating “You mean paid by others.” Newspapers merely have to add (paid by others; ed) after the word “free” to clarify.
Think of the effect this would have on our present culture. When some protestor grabs a bullhorn and shouts “I demand my (choose: medical insurance, college tuition, abortion, gym membership, I-pod, etc) be paid by others”, the net effect would be not nearly as inflammatory as the word “free”, but would be astronomically more accurate. Given time, the entire concept of “free stuff” would change.
I’m sure that some will consider it presumptuous for a mere engineer to play antics with semantics, but word usage should be precise both in denotation and connotation.
Thanks.

It just occurred to me... With all the noise the media is making about Romney's wealth, I don't recall such bluster and hand-wringing over the Kennedy fortune. Or, for that matter, John Kerry. Or the fact that John Kerry gave virtually nothing to charity while Romney gave something on the order of $4 million ... in addition to his entire inheritance from his father. Oh. Wait. I just remembered. Romney is Republican. Kerry and the Kennedys are Democrats. Also, Romney worked for his money. Kennedy inherited his. And Kerry married it.
Never mind. Nothing to see here folks. Moving along.

Subject: Luxury?? Who's out of touch?
Bobby,
Obama says the Republicans are out of touch? His family did not have the “luxury” of having a stay-at-home mom? It is not a luxury to stay at home with your children, it is a choice. I respect either choice a mother and father make for their specific situation. Some women prefer to join the workforce and that is ok if that is their choice. But I will tell you from personal experience that the choice my wife and I made for my wife to stay home with our three children was not a luxury. We made the conscience decision to cut our family income in half when she stopped working. I don’t care if it is $40,000 or $140,000, you notice when your family income gets cut in half. It is a choice you make to adjust your lifestyle. After 18 years, we have never regretted our choice.
Sincerely,
Dave

Senate Democrats recently unveiled legislation that would ensure that all millionaires would pay a federal tax of at least 30 percent. They call it the "Buffet Bill," referring to the billionaire, Warren Buffet. He's the guy that said his secretary pays a higher rate of taxes than he does.
Well, he's also the guy that is the CEO of the eight-largest public company in the world, Berkshire-Hathaway. And this pro-tax tycoon's company has owed up to a Billion, yes, with a B in tax dollars since 2002. This is a company that has total assets of somewhre around 380 Billion dollars. Yet they can't come up with the One Billion that is owed in back taxes.
The "Buffet Bill?" I can't make this stuff up. Talk about hypocrisy. Or absolute mind-numbing stupidity. And as usual, coming from Washington. Go figure.

Every time a dead person, a non-citizen, or a repeat voter votes they take away the votes of actual American citizens. It's theft. It's cheating.
Our vote is the only tool we have to put in office elected officials, who can represent us and protect our rights and freedoms.
Those, who are against ID's to vote, are actually saying that they are fine with votes of American citizens being nullified.
For those who wonder why our elected officials don't seem to represent us, they should ask themselves- who is voting?
How about we stop discriminating against American citizens?

Gunther,
The election in November will allow us to see if Pennsylvanians really understand why and how this country has radically transformed. The election that will give us the answer is not the re-election of Obama but the re-election of Senator Casey.
As I see it, Barack Obama could not have achieved all that he has achieved on his own. He could not have wasted taxpayer money on the stimulus & omnibus bills, taken over a car company, socialized healthcare, and more…without many elected officials surrounding him who enabled him - sometimes with their votes, sometimes by their silence.
Senator Casey is one of the enablers of Obama's agenda.
So, even if PA doesn't re-elect Obama but does re-elect Casey, then it will be clear to me that we still haven't learned that the problems we face are bigger than one man. We won't be able to correct our problems if all the enablers are still in office.
So, watch the election for PA Senate and you will see what the future holds for this country. If we don't get it by now, we never will.

Why isn't she paying their healthcare and birth control for the rest of their lives? Doesn't she care about women?
Why isn't she personally subsidizing a failed economic structure in her own company with her own wealth that she personally redistributes to these employees?

Gunther,
The Oxford English Dictionary defines “slut” as, “To behave like a slovenly woman or a woman of loose morals.”
Since words have an exact meaning, Rush used the word “slut” per the exact meaning. However, his use of that word took the focus off of the truly heinous, altruist principle in Fluke’s completely “staged” testimony only to radical left Democrats in Congress.
That heinous principle and economic outrage is that a woman, any woman, could arrogantly demand that her medical services be paid for by other people, that is, the taxpayers.
I agree that Rush should apologize, but not to Sandra Fluke. He should be apologizing to his conservative listeners for using a word accurately that took the focus off of the heinous principle of redistribution of wealth that was the core of Fluke’s testimony.

The school board voted to sign a five year contract with Keystone Realty Advisors of Haddonfield, N.J.
"According to the contract, the firm will be paid 30 percent of the taxes collected in each of the first three years for each successful appeal, plus a maximum of $5,000 in expenses."
How ironic! The county is supposed to do its job-collecting all the taxes that the school board wants to spend and they can't even do that.
So, they have to hire a private company to do the job that the government fails to do and then they have to pay the private firm 30% commission.

Gunther:
I always enjoy the moment when you and John Brinson go at it.
Today, John muddied the relationship between rights and tax money.
A right of behavior is not a right to tax money. Specifically,
a person has a right to (pursue happiness?) obtain birth control
devices. That person does not have the right to have the
government pay for it or for the government to force someone else,
eg. an insurance company, to pay for it. There is nothing in the
Constitution that even suggests that the federal government can
pay for birth control devices (or countless other things).
It's little more than a play on the old political theme,
I want it as long as someone else pays for it.
The opening paragraph of the Constitution states
'promote the general welfare'. Liberals hang their hat on this
statement as a basis for most (all?) entitlements.
Following the liberal line of thinking, a person may apply
for welfare benefits. Insurance companies financed by my
and your premium dollars have no welfare payment obligations.
Confused? The Second Amendment says we have a right to own guns.
Does the government hand out free guns to anyone who wants them?

A side note for the many talking heads who don’t seem to get it: the Catholic Church is more than a physical structure or a mass that occurs within that building, but it is all the people, organizations, schools, hospitals and such that comprise the Catholic Church.

Subject: How to criticize Obama
Hi, Bobby -
Although I did not vote for him, I had great hopes that Barack Obama could do wonders in our country by putting to rest the constant and overblown allegations of racisim in our society. After all, he is HALF black and HALF white. After all, he was elected to our nation's highest office by a population that is mostly Caucasian. Nevertheless, he has totally portrayed himself as black and black only, and continued to polarize our country along racial lines.
So, when criticizing his policies, anyone who wants to avoid being anti-black can play a sort of reverse race card, and claim only to be criticizing the half of him that is white, thereby reminding everyone about his true racial heritage, and, at the same time, avoiding being called a bigot. I do wish that we would judge him (or anyone else, for that matter) on the content of his character rather than the color of his skin, but since the media is dead-set against fulfilling Dr. King's dream, perhaps we could just continue to remind everyone that Obama is neither fish nor fowl.
I am so very deeply disappointed in our president because of this racial issue. He doesn't need to claim that he is black, but he does so in order to insulate himself from criticism. If he were honest, he would own his ENTIRE ancestry, not just the half that he has used to divide us far more than the great Dr. Martin Luther King could have imagined. Dr. King looked to the day when we could all label ourselves as Americans, without regard to who our parents were. I am old enough to remember the broadcast of his famous speech in Washington, and remember how his words were the words of a great statesman, who spoke the truth with clarity and courage.
Sincerely yours,
Carl
